Get to know George
My name is George Martinez, and with my wife Clara, we are proud to call East Anchorage our home and raise our family here. I grew up a child of a single mom on public assistance and learned how to survive, persevere, and thrive. I had successful careers as a college professor, public servant, nonprofit executive, and social entrepreneur, eventually receiving international diplomatic appointments under the Republican and Democratic administrations. I later served as the Special Assistant to the Mayor of Anchorage and recently as the Vice-President of Communications and Community Engagement at the Alaska Humanities Forum.
I believe in giving back to the community and volunteer hundreds of hours each year, including serving on the boards of great organizations like the Alaska Youth Orchestras and the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. Last year, I defended the constitutional rights of the residents of East Anchorage as a plaintiff in the victorious landmark decision by the Alaska Supreme Court against the illegal redistricting of East Anchorage to Eagle River. Then as President of the Northeast Community Council, I led the community response to the ill-advised homeless camp at Centennial Park.
Serving in the Assembly is about bringing people together to achieve practical solutions to improve our community. It’s about standing up for East Anchorage, rolling up our sleeves, and working to make our city a connected, safe, and thriving place.
